Hospital Support

For some, their journey towards mental health involves admission into a psychiatric ward. Our hospital division works to guide patients and families through the hospitalization process, which is frightening, confusing, and can feel shameful. Our hospital liaison is on call for you throughout your hospital stay, to provide support in a place where there is none.

This involves

Helping patients/family members understand how to work with hospital procedures. We provide guidance on when and how to self-advocate, and when to accept the situation as a necessary though temporary need. We work with families to demystify the treatment plan, which makes the experience less overwhelming and frightening.

Coaching parents on how to present the situation to their children/family at home, and how to support them through this time. Any hospitalization feels very frightening for the family. A psychiatric hospitalization has a lot of added elements: fear of the unknown, shame, the need for privacy to name a few. The primary caregiver often has no resources to focus on the family at home, and crucial needs and fears are overlooked. We work with you to craft a plan that will promote and calm an open feeling for the patient’s family. Our goal is to reduce trauma and negative emotions, so that the situation remains as contained as possible.

Helping through the discharge process- planning carefully to minimize trauma for family members.

There is no one correct answer for an appropriate discharge plan. There are many options to consider: Among them-the patient’s overall condition, the housing options available, and the needs of the family at home. Beacon helps you take all the factors into account, and helps you brainstorm for the discharge plan that will be best on all fronts.

When the crisis abates, our clients are shifted back to Beacon’s long- term guidance for a seamless continuum of care.
